BuildBeat 2006.R2 Supports Distributed Building

November 1, 2006 / Colorado Springs, CO

Timpani Software today announced the general availability of BuildBeat 2006.R2, the company's flagship build management product. BuildBeat reduces time and trials for software integration, improves team communication, and increases project visibility and software quality.

This release of BuildBeat offers support for accelerating a software project build by dividing the build workload among multiple computers. Timpani refers to this as distributed building. Distributed building makes it possible to drastically shorten the length of time it takes to do a software build. This is especially important when automated build management is enabled for continuous integration, a capability also supported by BuildBeat.

With continuous integration, team members are checking in new code frequently, and fresh builds are instantiated throughout the day. If the build takes too long to complete, it can result in lost productivity among the team. BuildBeat's distributed building alleviates build bottlenecks by utilizing the bandwidth from multiple machines to accelerate builds.

The BuildBeat distributed build system is based on a master/agent architecture. One machine acts as the master, or central build server. The master server then communicates with one or more other build servers, also running the BuildBeat software, that act as build agents. Build agents perform work on behalf of the master server. Results of build tasks run on build agents are funneled back through the master server, which coordinates the overall flow of the build.

Also new in the release is support for Serena's PVCS Version Manager. Timpani Software developed the integration with PVCS as part of its technology partnership agreement with Serena Software.
